Worm Farm – Building the Worm Bin

After deciding to become a Worm Farmer I had to build or buy a worm bin. Now the most popular commercially available worm bin is the Worm Factory 360 which will cost you about $119.99 CAN (not including shipping) without worms. This seemed like the easy but expensive option. On Pintrest there are lots of websites that claim that you can make a worm bin for $20. I used the Working Worms site (link below) to build my worm bin and numerous Youtube videos.

The cost for the build was $23.42 CAN with tax. I bought two grey 38L storage bins for $6.27 CAN each and one 53L storage bin for $8.37 CAN from Walmart. This was the only cost for the worm bin because my dad owns a power drill.

Instuctions:

1. Take the two 38L bins and drill a row of 1/4 inch holes at 2 inches apart about an inch from the rim of the bins. This is for aeration of the bin.

2. On the bottom of the 38L bins drill 1/4 and 1/8 inch holes about an inch apart. This is for worm movement and aeration.

3. Place the 53L bin in a shaded area that is also protected from the rain. This is where the worm tea will accumulate.

4. Put one of the 28L bin inside the 53L. This is where the worms will live. Set the other bin aside for when the bin is filled.

Note: I am planning on having my dad put a tap on the 53L bin later but we didn’t have the hardware. This will add to the overall cost of the project
